More is fine and so is less.

3 publications gives you a number of things:

You are able to test the audiences of different publications
Sometimes a bigger audience isn't always better - a smaller publication will have more engagement
Compare earnings from stories in various publications

Once you become a writer for a publication, ALWAYS submit your story to a publication before publishing.

It isn't a guarantee that your story will be accepted, however, a publication has the bandwidth for a bigger audience thus exposure to higher earnings.
